God sat at his almost infinite desk, drumming his fingers as he scowled at his organiser. Of course, being God, he was also above, around, through and under the desk, but, being God, he could easily imagine himself sitting at his almost infinite desk even as he was totally aware of everything that was going on in the entire universe. With a sigh he reached out and buzzed the intercom. His attractive secretary, Faith, bustled into the office.
“Oh dear,” she said, taking in God’s preoccupied look. “Whatever is the matter?”
“It’s those furry-headed little humans,” said God. “They’re worse than lemmings – they’ve been determined to self-destruct since that first encounter with an apple.”
“But can’t you just speak a word and erase their rebellious streak?” Faith asked.
“Not without trashing the free will that I gave them.”
“What about appearing to them?”
“I suppose I could try the ‘golden throne surrounded by a rainbow’ thing; it had a small effect once.
“I was thinking of something more personal, yet awe-inspiring. Perhaps a thousand foot tall, talking yeti?”
“Don’t be silly,” said God. “One thousand feet is far too small for an everlasting and almighty God – and they’d still freak out and say I was a monster. There’s no pleasing them. If I went as something the size of a cat, they’d try and neuter me.”
“Just go as a human, then, and speak to them, God to man.”
“I tried that,” said God, holding up his hands. “I’ve got the scars to prove it. Very few of them saw the point of my visit.”
“Well, I saw the point,” said Faith, encouragingly.
God stared at her for a moment. “Perhaps you have the answer,” he said. “I’ll give them the eyes of faith – cloned, of course,” he added hastily.
“Ye-e-es,” agreed Faith, “but won’t there be rejection problems?”
“Loads of them,” sighed God “So many will look and never see and will hear and never understand, but some will see the light and set foot on the road to Home.” He paused and moved in his seat. Faith glimpsed him from a new perspective.
“I’ll never stop reaching out to them,” God said. “Every single one that responds will be saved, whatever it costs.”
“That’s the Spirit,” said Faith.
