Fantasy for children aged 8 – 11 set in ‘Eggworld’, a world similar to our own, but where all the people are humpty-dumpty-style eggs. The books are full of word play (hence Captain P egg -L egg) and Jenny Wren’s-Egg’s name – she is a small, shrill stowaway.
The Captain starts out as the nastiest pirate in Eggworld but he Turns About.
The Captain and other pirates operate using square-rigged wooden sailing ships and resist modern advances such as bank accounts and mobile phones, although these do exist around them. Later books follow his battles against his ex-crewmate Bad Egg, and his problems with his diverse crew.
There is always a strong female character in each story and ‘Captain Pegg-Legg’s Treasure’ particularly follows Jenny Wren’s-Egg as the main character from page one.
Like the Narnia books the stories have some Christian content but are accessible to those of any faith or none.
Jessica Pierce is a modest, average 10-year-old who finds an injured tooth fairy in her little brother’s sock drawer and saves her. Jess is drawn into helping Amaryllis (known as Lis) to complete her delivery round and from there drawn deeper into fairy life; rescuing fairies who are in danger or trapped; confronting and becoming accepted by the fairy hierarchy and eventually being given her own puffer of fairy dust and trusted on solo missions.
The ‘Pearls and Carbuncles’ series of books are compiled from my blog, approximately one book per year, and consist of a wide range of short pieces on various subjects. Some are Christian reflections, others humorous short stories; some pieces are about pets or wildlife, there are even a few recipes. There are a few poems and pieces from other contributors. Most pieces are written for adult readers but there are also some for children.
