The Peapod Sandwich

I was busy writing the other day when I needed a mid-morning coffee and snack. I made the coffee and got out some bread to make some toast and all the while thinking about my writing. Absent-mindedly I spread the bread with the marg. What to do? I could have fried it but didn’t want to bother. I could have made Paddington’s favourite - a marmalade sandwich but I try and keep my sugar intake down. I could of spread it with Marmite but I eat a lot of Marmite already. Then I remembered a scene from my book! Captain Pegg-Legg’s Treasure! Jenny, a stowaway on the good pirates’ ship has been discovered. At an angry interview with the Captain she is told she’ll have to work hard and help the crew. cocky and bossy, she says she knows all about sailing so the Captain firmly puts her down.

“Go and help Bantams’s Egg in the Galley” he says, “I believe he’s making crisp sandwiches for lunch.”

Crisp sandwiches are a little known delicacy that my brother and I used to enjoy as kids- but on this writing day I had no crisps. I did have a savoury snack from a well-known liddle supermarket. Called Snaktastic, it is 72% marrowfat peas (in their pods), Baked crunchy seasoned and flavoured- Wonderful. The soy and balsamic vinegar variety made a great vegetarian, low sugar, low fat, not too much salt sandwich.
