Lauren St John writes lovely children’s books set in a wide range of environments around the world. Her latest book is ’Kat Wolfe Investigates’, 2018, ISBN 978-1-5098-7122-3. It is a wonderful crime/spy thriller in which a widowed mum and vet and her 12 year old daughter, Kat, move from London to the Dorset coast. While mum establishes herself in the practice, Kat tries to befriend the large, semi-wild resident cat that attacks strangers. She also starts a pet sitting agency to raise some pocket money and looks after a parrot, an elderly ladies retriever and an American professor’s ex-race horse. The parrot’s owner goes missing, strange events happen at the nearby army base and Kat meets her estranged grandfather, who happens to be the Minister of Defence.
This book is well up to the standard of Lauren’s previous works, one of which won the Blue Peter award for children’s fiction. Some of her other titles are: The Laura Marlyn Mysteries. Four stories featuring a girl and her three legged husky. The White Giraffe series, set in Africaa. The One Dollar Horse series (for teens).
All are recommended, although the heroine in the White Giraffe series is guided by a local ’wise woman’ and has healing powers. So many children’s books have a supernatural or super-power theme these days - but then, so did the ‘Narnia’ books!
